Theobromine Transmissions Ep 09 — Hans Carpani: The Wisdom of Neutrality

In this conversation, we speak with Hans Carpani, D.O., D.P.O., a biodynamically oriented osteopath with nearly four decades of clinical experience who has also trained with Dr. James Jealous, a pioneer in biodynamic osteopathy.

This episode is especially meaningful to me personally, as a brief interaction with Hans many years ago at the School of Homeopathy in Stroud unexpectedly became one of the catalysts that led me toward osteopathy, craniosacral therapy, and the wider path of embodied and biodynamic work that continues to shape my life today. Years later, through a synchronistic meeting, our paths crossed again — eventually leading me to spend a day alongside Hans and Steve in Stroud, working biodynamically with horses.

Together, we explore the subtle and often difficult-to-define nature of osteopathic work, from structural and cranial approaches to biodynamic practice. Hans shares how, beneath different techniques and modalities, much of this work involves learning to listen to what the body is communicating non-verbally — using one’s own system as an instrument through which another system can be met, sensed, and understood.

We speak about neutrality, spaciousness, practitioner burnout, humility, surrender, and the importance of approaching treatment without imposing agenda or attachment to outcome. Hans reflects beautifully on working with animals — particularly horses — and how their sensitivity and honesty can teach practitioners profound lessons about presence, regulation, and relational space.

We also explore the subtle differences between working with adults, children, and animals, and how modern life can leave many people operating in ways that feel intrusive or overwhelming to more embodied nervous systems. Hans shares how meaningful therapeutic work often emerges not through force or fixing, but through creating the conditions in which the body has enough safety and vital reserve to reorganise itself naturally.

Throughout the conversation, we reflect on what it means to truly be of service, the sacredness of therapeutic relationship, and the humility required to participate in processes of healing without trying to control them.
