In this conversation, we speak with Bob Evans, former financial executive, systems thinker, and trustee of both Wild Survivors and Trinity Yard School in Ghana.
During a 25-year career in finance, Bob pioneered a radically decentralised approach to organisational structure inspired by Kevin Kelly’s book Out of Control and its exploration of the adaptive intelligence found within the beehive. Together, we explore how systems such as the beehive operate through distributed intelligence, resilience, cooperation, and responsiveness rather than rigid hierarchy and centralised control.
Bob reflects on how implementing these ideas within the corporate world challenged traditional power structures, yet ultimately led to extraordinary growth, resilience, and talent retention — even during the 2008 financial crisis. We also speak candidly about why these systems can still struggle to sustain themselves within human organisations, and the role unresolved personal and collective dynamics can play in the consolidation of power and resources.
Alongside this, we explore Bob’s involvement with Wild Survivors in Tanzania, where community-led beekeeping initiatives are helping support both local livelihoods and elephant conservation. Through the creation of beehive fences along migratory corridors, communities are able to reduce human-elephant conflict while generating economic opportunities rooted in ecological stewardship and coexistence.
Throughout the conversation, we reflect on systems, resilience, leadership, ecology, and what becomes possible when we learn to organise in closer relationship with the intelligence of the living world.
